[exp] [/exp]I have family in Virginia, and for years I’ve been subjected to The Dump’s commercials when I visit. On the radio, on TV, it’s always the same voice & same jingle, and without fail, it takes weeks for it to get out of my head.
And now they’re in Atlanta. Great. Just what I need. It’s not entirely a bad thing though. Here’s the deal: The Dump specializes in selling name-brand furniture & rugs cheap. Like 30%-70% off kind of cheap.
Here’s how they do it:
1) They’re only open three days each week: Friday, Saturday, & Sunday.
2) The merchandise is a mix of overstocks, one-of-a-kinds, factory sell outs, showroom models, & design prototypes. It’s new, but the tradeoff is that you have less of a selection.
3) “Less of a selection” is a relative term—they stock thousands of pieces of furniture (including leather), rugs, mattresses for living rooms, dining rooms, home offices, and home theaters. The odds are in your favor that you’ll find something that’ll work for the space, even if it wasn’t exactly what you had in mind when you started shopping.
By the way, if you sign up for their email updates, they’ll send you coupons. When I signed up, I got a coupon for an additional $25 off a purchase of $299+.
The Dump is located at 815 Sidney Marcus Blvd., Atlanta. 404-442-1900.

Dear Sir, or Ma’m, I was wandering do you have any parttime positions available in your warehouse? I do have moving experience. Reply soon. God Bless!

Just for the record, I’ve bought a beautiful oriental rug from The Dump at a very good price. Then I bought a mattress set, which was delivered and put in an upstairs bedroom with no problem.
Then I bought a living room sofa and loveseat. After they delivered it to my house, I really did not like the color and the size of the pieces in my room. I called to return them. They wanted to charge a restocking fee, but because I picked out another set in their store, they delivered it and picked up the original set with only one delivery fee (the original one) and no restocking fee. This was the Atlanta store, and I feel that I got very good, reasonable service….and I’m very, extremely, happy with the sofa and chair I ended up buying. We will go back.

The Dump has horrible customer service. Once you buy anything from this company, they keep mailing you shit and you can never get off of their mailing list.
I was hung up on by their Customer Service Management on 5/28/2011 multiple times.
I finally contacted Eric Nichols at the Atlanta store, who says he would help me, so hopefully he will. I will continue to follow this chain to see if he was able to assist me.

I missed a delivery for about a thousand dollars worth of furniture. I tried to arrange for redelivery and the dump charged me over 500 dollars in restocking fees, delivery fees (for something that was not delivered) and in the end I never got the furniture. I had the remaining balance refunded to me. Just traveling down there to buy furniture that was not delivered cost me over 500 dollars! I would never do business with the Dump in the future. We’re telling all family and friends to avoid this thieving band of highway robbers like the plague.

The Dump has ok furniture. My husband ordered an executive desk for his home office with hutch and credenza. We got the labor day sale so we got free delivery and assembly. BUT they did not say the desk would be delivered preassembled so of course it didn’t fit thru the door it’s an executive desk!! The delivery people said they can’t disassemble and reassemble inside the office (but they would be willing to do it on the side after work for a fee) Of course we said no & had to return it. The Dump is charging us the restocking fee of 10% that’s $200. To us that is a SCAM!!! They know a desk that big will not fit thru a door!! DO NOT SHOP AT THE DUMP UNLESS YOU HAVE DOUBLE DOORS TROUGH OUT YOUR ENTIRE HOME!!

I just looked at the BBB list–given the volume they likely sell, there aren’t an unreasonable number of complaints. It seems to vary by location (as is to be expected). A couple of locations are BBB Accredited. I don’t know why the others aren’t–i.e. if the BBB won’t let them or if they choose not to pursue it. Out of curiosity, I checked the store I’ve been to in Richmond, and it got a B+. Others are either not rated or have a C- or better. I didn’t see any Fs.
Searched a few other sites & found anecdotes re: complaints. One was from a guy who was ticked that they didn’t refund his money when the mattress blew off his car & was destroyed when he was driving down the highway. No store will refund for that, and yet he’s waging a personal war vs. The Dump because of it.
There are some things I just won’t buy cheap, like a mattress. I will pay extra for the warranty & quality. For others, like furniture the kids are going to destroy, I will shop for a deal, which may or may not be at The Dump–it pays to shop around. And I always use my credit card so that I can dispute the charge if they fail to hold up their end of the deal.

Before shopping there, you might want to check out the Better Business Bureau complaints against The Dump. They do not have the best reputation.

Thanks, Laura. I may just do that–thinking about getting the girls some variation of a daybed–they’re old enough for sleepovers, and it’d be nice to keep the other kid off the floor.~Jenn
