If you’re a gardening aficionado, maybe you’ve dreamed of attending the Chelsea Flower Show in person, in London.
It’s a hot ticket, for sure — the 2019 event had a dress code and the equivalent of a hundred-dollar price tag for a one-day pass.
This year, armchair travelers can pop in and out of the Chelsea Flower Show at will, virtually. Because, of course, the real-life event was canceled for 2020.
The world’s most famous flower show debuted in 1862, under Queen Victoria’s reign, as the Great Spring Show. In 1912, it moved to London’s Chelsea district and became the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show.
And in all that time, Chelsea has only been called off twice — during World War I, and then again for the duration of World War II. (If you doubted the severity of this year’s global pandemic, let that sink in!)
For gardeners here in America, this offers the virtual chance of a lifetime. We can simply beam ourselves into English gardens, demonstrations and talks, nurseries, public green spaces, greenhouses, and more.
From May 18th to 23rd, the Royal Horticultural Society will host free content online, including garden tours led by celebrity designers and behind-the-scenes nursery tours led by growers. Each day will follow a special theme.
There’s even a virtual message from Queen Elizabeth.
