(Park)ing Day is a fun, public art project that takes place on the third Friday of September each year. In 2021, that lands on Friday, September 17th.
The idea is to temporarily re-purpose parking lots by turning them into tiny parks for the day — and inviting people to come out to play in the park. In some ways it is similar to the Streets Alive events, where long stretches of city streets are closed to traffic for an afternoon.
We’ve found a couple of local (Park)ing Day installations around metro Atlanta this year. The movement just began in 2005, so we hope the tradition will continue to expand and we’ll see more and more installations each year. These events are FREE to attend.
(Park)ing Day on Peachtree
Friday, Sept. 17th
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This installation takes place downtown, on Peachtree Street between Baker and Ellis. The public is invited to come explore a range of free activities along all three blocks.
(Park)ing Day at Lenox Square
Friday, Sept. 17th
11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The parking lot at Lenox Square Mall will be reimagined as a wooded wonderland, with a patchwork of pop-up parks. This is the 6th year that Livable Buckhead has sponsored the event at Lenox, and it’s one of the largest (Park)ing Day events in the Southeast.
More than 20 local organizations will construct mini-parks, with features ranging from a Zen garden to flower walls and bee hives. The pop-up parks will also feature interactive elements, including scooter safety training and a putting green. There will be a tree-lined, curving path connecting the mini-parks through the mall parking lot.
Visit the Livable Buckhead website for photos from previous years.
