The Emory Gamelan Ensemble will perform a FREE concert on Sunday, January 28, 2024 from 4 to 5 p.m. Tickets are limited, so you must register in advance.
Gamelan refers to a type of orchestra music indigenous to the islands of Java and Bali. It consists of gongs and various types of instruments that the performer strikes with mallets. It is played by an ensemble of musicians.
The first gamelan instruments arrived at Emory University in 1997 from the city of Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia.
Since then, the ensemble as grown to over twenty members, and includes Emory students, faculty, and members of the Atlanta community.
Directed by Darsono Hadiraharjo, the ensemble practices primarily traditional karawitan music from Central Java. Join the ensemble as they play in a chamber music style, called gadhon.
The concert takes place in Ackerman Hall at the Carlos Museum.
