[exp] [/exp]From 9:00 a.m.-noon on June 17, 2017, Oakland Cemetery will host a free Juneteenth celebration.
If you’re not familiar with it, Juneteenth is a nationally-recognized commemorative day celebrating the abolishment of slavery in the Confederate south at the end of the Civil War, and it was originally celebrated in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865.
Saturday’s festivities include free guided walking tours of Oakland Cemetery’s African American Grounds at 9:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for adults & 10:15 a.m. for children, cultural scavenger hunts for kids, storytelling with LaDoris Bias-Davis, African American burial record and descendant research, & more. It’s free to attend the Juneteenth celebration; no reservations are required.
