Through the seven days of Kwanzaa, you can devote a day to each principle — or incorporate them into your celebration collectively. These are basic ideas for family celebrations.

1. Umoja (Unity): Kick off Kwanzaa by bringing family and friends together. Create a sense of unity by sharing meals, stories, and laughter.
2. Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): Reflect on personal goals and aspirations. Families can set individual and collective intentions for the coming year.
3. Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): Embrace the spirit of collaboration by engaging in community service projects.
4. Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): Support local businesses and entrepreneurs within the community.
5. Nia (Purpose): This principle encourages setting goals that benefit the greater good.
6. Kuumba (Creativity): Infuse creativity into your Kwanzaa celebration through art, music, dance, or handmade gifts.

• Mkeka (Mat): Place a colorful mat, symbolizing the foundation for the celebration, on a central table.
• Kinara (Candleholder): Arrange seven candles in the kinara, representing the seven principles. Light one candle each night in a specific order.
• Mazao (Crops): Display fruits and vegetables to symbolize the rewards of collective labor and the bountiful harvest.
