[exp] [/exp]The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History is home to The General, a Confederate locomotive stolen by Union spies while its passengers & crew were eating breakfast at the Lacy Hotel in Big Shanty, giving you a close-up look at a key piece of the Great Locomotive Chase, as well as other train-themed exhibitions, from Railroads: Lifelines of the Civil War to Glover Machine Works: Casting a New South.
And on Saturday, you have a unique opportunity to climb aboard The General and handle select museum artifacts that are normally off limits to visitors. From 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. on March 23, 2013, The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History will host its inaugural Museum Night: Trains, Planes and Cars. In addition to checking out the exhibitions, there’ll be slot cars, an airplane competition, a railroad camp, an operating model railroad layout, a pair of antique vehicles on display (a 1940 Packard and a 1955 Chevrolet) & more.
Admission for Museum Night is $10 for adult museum members, $15 for adult non-members and $7 for children ages 4-12. Museum members can purchase a family pack of tickets (for two adults and up to four children) for $25; the family pack is $35 for non-members.
Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History is located at 2829 Cherokee Street, Kennesaw. 770-427-2117
