Put your best foot forward with a First Day Hike
Georgia State Parks are continuing the New Year tradition with ranger-led hikes on January 1st and 2nd.
Capacity is limited this year and you must reserve a spot in advance — no walk-ups allowed.
We’ve put together a list of the State Parks closest to Atlanta that are offering free or cheap hikes this year.

Want to take a hike on your own, without driving to a state park? Head to the Peachtree Creek Greenway. We also love the walking trail around the lake at Murphey Candler Park, in Dekalb County.
Head to Stone Mountain for an early countdown & fireworks
Stone Mountain Christmas is open on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’ s Day.
On New Year’s Eve, the park will operate the Christmas event as usual from noon to 9 p.m.
It will ring in the New Year with additional fireworks, snowfall, and an early countdown just for kids. When the clock strikes nine, the festivities and fireworks commence!

Play in the snow at Lanier Islands
The snow tubing hills and play areas at Lanier Islands are open both on New Year’s Eve AND New Year’s Day.

Glide across the ice at a seasonal rink

- Atlantic Station — 11 to 7 on Dec. 31 AND 4 to 11 p.m. on Jan 1
- Avalon — 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on both days
- Old Town Conyers — noon to 10 p.m. on Jan 1
