You are invited to tour the historic former library building in downtown Norcross.
The Open House event takes place on Friday, February, 21, 2025, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
This is the first time in decades this landmark has been open to the public.
It is located at:
65 N. Peachtree St.
Norcross, GA 30071
The building was the first public library in Gwinnett County.
According to the National Register of Historic Places, it was built in 1921, making it about 104 years old.
After the building was no longer in use as a public library, the Norcross Women’s Club occupied the space.
At one point, the city of Norcross moved to condemn the property and take possession of it through eminent domain.
Fortunately, preservationists were able to lobby effectively to prevent its demolition.
Now, the city will become stewards of the historic property.
The Norcross Historic Preservation Commission will be responsible for rehabbing and maintaining the structure, going forward.
According to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, the structure is a Carnegie-style Greek Revival structure constructed in 1921 by the Woman’s Club as the first library in Gwinnett County.
The Norcross Woman’s Club was founded in 1905 by civic-minded women involved with the National Library Movement. In 1907, the women approached various businessmen and philanthropists, including Andrew Carnegie, for donations to support the construction of a library building.
