peach drop, new year’s eve Atlanta, underground Atlanta, Atlanta peach drop
The Peach Drop is very likely to return to Underground Atlanta, to ring in the New Year, as 2024 fades into 2025!
In October, Atlanta City Council approved a $650,000 agreement with Live Nation Entertainment, to fund the production and stage the event — as well as offer concerts by nationally known performers.
The Peach Drop often attracts over 50,000 people and is by far the most famous and popular New Year’s Eve celebration in the Southeast.
This tradition started in 1989, and was loosely based on the famous ball drop in Times Square, New York City, each New Year’s Eve. It quickly became an iconic New Year’s Eve event in Atlanta, and tens of thousands of people showed up each year to watch the 800-pound peach make its descent down a 138-foot tower.
The Peach Drop went on hiatus in 2019, with the promise it would return bigger and better than ever in 2020. Well, that didn’t happen — thanks to you-know-what. But now the famous FREE event is back, and open to anyone who wants to celebrate. We have all the details, just below.
You also might consider the huge FREE New Year’s Eve Bash being held at The Battery this year, to celebrate the arrival of 2024.
We’ll be listing other free or “cheap” NYE events as we find them — you can check here to see what we have so far.

Getting there
Many, many downtown streets will be closed for this event, and it would be an act of insanity to drive downtown on New Year’s Eve. Ride share is an option, but keep in mind that surge pricing will likely be in effect, and even a short ride could become an expensive option.
Your best bet is to drive to your nearest MARTA station (or take a ride share service to the station) and hop on a train. Keep in mind that MARTA parking lots at end-of-the-line stations can fill up very quickly.
You can park your car for FREE at the following rail stations:
- Lindbergh
- Lenox
- Brookhaven
- Chamblee
- Doraville
- Dunwoody
- Sandy Springs
- North Springs
- College Point
- East Point
- Lakewood
- West End
NOTE that masks are required on MARTA trains and buses. If you forget to bring your own, you’ll be handed one by MARTA staff.
There will be security officers on hand on train platforms on NYE, to help with passenger loading and unloading, to help prevent overcrowding.
TIP: Purchase a Breeze Card in advance if you don’t have one. If you do have a card, add a round trip fare online, so you don’t have to wait at a fare machine. Remember, trains run every 20 minutes or so. The MARTA ON THE GO app can put train schedules in your pocket!
Getting there is easy — no matter which direction you’re coming from, you’ll exit your train at Five Points Station.
