The Preacher’s Wife is a brand new musical that is playing now at the Alliance Theatre. This is the show’s world premiere — which means Atlantans have an amazing opportunity to see this show NOW, in an intimate setting, for a reasonable price.
If you don’t see The Preacher’s Wife now, your next chance to see it will involve a trip to NYC to see it on Broadway — or a four-year wait until Broadway in Atlanta brings it to the Fox (where you’ll pay a lot of money for a seat with a mediocre view).
This is a blockbuster of a show.
We’re not in the theater review business here at Atlanta On The Cheap, but we’re telling you without hesitation that this show blew our minds. The music, the staging, the spectacular sets, the special effects — all of it was completely mesmerizing and enjoyable.
Singer/actress Amber Riley, from the cast of Glee, leads a talented all-Black cast.
Amber may have been slightly overshadowed by other TV show cast members back then, but this is her moment to shine.
Every performer in the show, including the child actor/singers, delivers a powerful performance.
The show is scheduled to run through June 16, 2024.
There are both evening and matinee showtimes, and you can choose from Orchestra or Balcony seating.
The Alliance Theatre is a small venue with excellent sight lines from every seat.
Each row is a step higher than the one in front of it, so you’re never staring at the back of someone’s head.
It’s easy to get to the Alliance on MARTA — just get off at Arts Center Station and cross the street, then walk across the Woodruff Arts Center campus.
Ticket info
For some reason, perhaps because this is a brand new show that few people have heard of, the Alliance was NOT sold out on the Wednesday evening we saw the show.
A look at the ticketing page for the Alliance Theatre reveals that there are still excellent seats available, both in the Orchestra and Balcony sections.
In fact, at the time of writing, there were so many open seats for the Tuesday, June 4th performance that the price has been steeply discounted. Premium seats that are normally $125 are just $85 for that date.
Of course, you don’t have to splurge on a premium seat.
Standard seat tickets are as low as $45, depending on the day and time. And there are literally no bad seats at the Alliance — it all depends on how close you prefer to be to the stage.
Remember, this is the show’s world premiere.
It has never played anywhere before this run in Atlanta — so we have an amazing opportunity. (Water For Elephants also had a world premiere at Alliance, and is now playing on Broadway!)
Atlanta, let’s show some love for the cast of The Preacher’s Wife. Let’s fill the house to capacity, on every night of the show’s run.

This is what the Alliance website says about the show:
Inspired by the beloved blockbuster film, THE PREACHER’S WIFE is a stirring new musical about the power of hope. In their fast-gentrifying Harlem neighborhood, Preacher Henry and his wife Julia struggle to keep their congregation going in the face of development.
When all seems lost, the family asks God for help, and receives it in the form of an angel. But will this mysterious newcomer really help or make matters worse?
Through it all, Julia must find her voice and the strength to lead their congregation through the crisis, reminding them that a church is not a building, but the people who inhabit it and the love they share.
Featuring an original, gospel-infused score by actor, comedian, and writer Tituss Burgess (TV’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and a book by actress, producer, and writer Azie Dungey (TV’s Harlem), with direction by Tony Award winner Michael Arden (Parade) and Alliance’s Jennings Hertz Artistic Director Tinashe Kajese-Bolden (Toni Stone), THE PREACHER’S WIFE is a can’t-miss theatrical celebration of family and faith.
