[exp] [/exp]From February 18-March 8, 2015, Wicked returns to the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. I tried to get tickets to see Wicked at the Fox Theatre during the last run via the Wicked lottery (details below) and…no luck. We had four entries (one per person), but with 100+ people vying for 10 pairs of tickets, the odds were not in our favor.
I bought tickets anyway, and I’m glad I did. I loved everything about Wicked, from the catchy songs to the well-timed & often hilarious references to The Wizard of Oz. I’ve read the book, too, and I have to say–it’s a fun adaptation of the work. If you’re not familiar with the plot, here’s the quick summary: “Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the Land of Oz. One–born with emerald-green skin–is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, and how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.”
Since I’d already arranged childcare, I’d resolved to buy tickets regardless, but two hours prior to curtain, the only seats left were limited view. FYI–Limited view is not the same as obstructed; limited means that you may miss a bit of the action, depending on where the actors are on the stage.
Limited view has its pros & cons.
- Pros: The seats are fairly cheap (about $40 each when I went), and you don’t miss most of the production, as quite a bit takes place in the center 2/3 of stage.
- Cons: If you’re a set person (like I am), you may not get the full effect; I couldn’t see anything on the back wall of the stage. And they never brought Tin Man or the Cowardly Lion center stage, so my side of the audience (those of us in the right side of the house) didn’t even get a glimpse of the costumes.
For this run, I bought full-price tickets months ago, as I wanted to ensure that the we got the full experience this time. Had I not seen it before, I’d still try to get in on the cheap via the ticket lottery. If that didn’t work out, I’d buy any seat I could get in the center section of the theatre.
Per Broadway Across America-Atlanta, your best bet to snag last-minute tickets to Wicked will be on Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday evenings during the run.
Lottery details: A limited number of orchestra seats for Wicked will be reserved for a ticket lottery. Each day, you can stop by the Fox Theatre box office 2 & 1/2 hours prior to show time to place your name in a lottery drum (last time, it was a cauldron) at The Fox. Thirty minutes later, names will be drawn, and the orchestra seats will be sold for $25 each, cash only. The lottery is available in-person only at the box office (photo ID required), and there’s a limit of two tickets per person.
The Fox Theatre is located at 660 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta.
